A violent shootout between armed men near the Meyerton Taxi Rank in the Vaal this morning left a learner from Dr. Malan High School injured and forced the suspension of taxi operations in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the shooting erupted between members of two private security companies allegedly hired by rival taxi associations. The exchange of gunfire occurred as learners and commuters were making their way to school and work, causing panic in the area.
Learner Caught in Crossfire
The injured learner was rushed to the hospital but is reported to have sustained only minor injuries, with authorities confirming the wound was not a gunshot but likely a scratch sustained during the chaos. Police later verified that the victim was an employee of one of the security companies involved.
Heavy Weaponry Recovered
Police combing the scene recovered 10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols, raising concerns over the proliferation of illegal firearms and the role of private security in taxi violence.
An SAPS Colonel spokesperson, confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened, with provincial detectives leading the investigation. “We are still determining the motive and verifying whether these security companies are properly registered,” she said.
Taxi Rank Shut Down, Commuters Stranded
The taxi rank remains cordoned off as forensic teams process the scene, leaving commuters stranded and fearful. No arrests have been made yet, but police are questioning witnesses.
Local taxi associations have not commented, with many eyewitnesses too afraid to speak due to the volatile situation.
Calls for Calm Amid Rising Tensions
While the injured learner is expected to recover, the incident has renewed concerns over ongoing taxi violence and the use of armed security in disputes between rival associations. Authorities have urged calm as investigations continue.
