A couple from Middelburg, Quinton Steyn (39) and Lizette Steyn (38), tragically died in a light aircraft crash near Botshabelo Airfield on Sunday, 18 May 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 16:00.
According to police reports, the couple was traveling from Nelspruit to their home in Middelburg when the accident happened. Authorities, along with other emergency responders, were called to the scene, where they found the aircraft still engulfed in flames. The victims were burned beyond recognition.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage. The relevant aviation crash investigation agencies have been notified, and an official inquiry has been launched to determine the circumstances leading to the fatal incident.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed his deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
