Cape Town Officers Arrested for Kidnapping and Extortion

Two City of Cape Town Law Enforcement officers have been arrested and charged with kidnapping and extortion following an alleged incident in Khayelitsha last week.

The arrests were made on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, after a coordinated operation involving the Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Task Team, POCC Operational Combat Task Team, Cape Town K9 Unit, and the City of Cape Town’s Special Investigations Unit (SSIU).

Details of the Incident

According to reports, the two officers approached a man at a supermarket in iLitha Park, Khayelitsha, on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, and demanded to see his asylum documentation. When the man could not produce the required papers, the officers allegedly instructed him to go with them.

Later, they reportedly contacted the victim’s family and demanded a ransom for his release. The victim’s brother managed to gather an undisclosed sum of money, which he handed over to the officers, securing the victim’s freedom.

Investigation and Arrest

After the victim filed a complaint, authorities identified and investigated the officers involved. The investigating officer successfully applied for arrest warrants, which were granted by the court.

The suspects, aged 36 and 41, were taken into custody on Tuesday and are set to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 22 May 2025, to face charges of kidnapping and extortion.

The case has raised concerns over the conduct of law enforcement officials, with authorities emphasizing that such actions will not be tolerated. Further updates are expected as the legal proceedings unfold.
