In a disturbing incident that has left the nation in shock, two premature babies were stolen from Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) before being recovered thanks to a vigilant community and social media.
How the Theft Unfolded
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Health, a woman allegedly gained access to the hospital’s maternity ward by impersonating a patient who had recently delivered a stillborn baby. The suspect, who was reportedly familiar with the hospital’s layout, spent time in the wards before stealing the infants from the neonatal (NICU) unit.
Authorities revealed that she was assisted by another woman, believed to be a recent mother herself, in placing the babies into a suitcase before fleeing the hospital.
Social Media Leads to Arrest
The breakthrough in the case came when neighbors in Motherwell, a township near Gqeberha, recognized the suspect from a viral video circulating online. The footage allegedly showed her inside the hospital with the infants.
Acting on the tip-off, hospital shop stewards and police tracked down the suspect to a house in Motherwell, where the suitcase was found outside. Upon confrontation, the woman showed no remorse, leading officials to suspect she may have been suffering from a phantom pregnancy.
Babies Reunited with Families
Fortunately, the two infants were found unharmed and have since been reunited with their mothers. One of the mothers is a 16-year-old minor, whose family had struggled to gain access to her before the incident came to light.
Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson Siyanda Manana confirmed that the babies are in good health and have received medical care since their return.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are questioning the two women involved, as well as a man believed to be the suspect’s partner. The case has raised serious concerns about security protocols in maternity wards, with calls for stricter measures to prevent similar incidents.
As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that the infants are safe and receiving proper care. The incident serves as a chilling reminder of the vulnerabilities in healthcare facilities and the power of community vigilance in solving crimes.
