Two city law enforcement officers have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping two men in Khayelitsha and demanding ransom. The officers, part of the metal theft unit, were detained after an internal investigation.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith condemned the incident, confirming disciplinary hearings alongside criminal proceedings. The case revives concerns over corruption in law enforcement, following last year’s arrest of eight SAPS officers for extorting businesses.
Extortion remains a major issue in areas like Khayelitsha, Nyanga, and Philippi, where businesses often face protection fee demands. Authorities vow to intensify efforts to root out corruption.
