The Thabazimbi Regional Court has handed down a 20-year direct prison sentence to a 29-year-old man for the rape of a 13-year-old girl in October 2023, delivering justice in a case that horrified the Northam community.
The convicted rapist, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victim, was found guilty of assaulting the minor on 09 October 2023 at approximately 15:00 in Northam Extension 02.
Details of the Crime
Court evidence revealed that the victim had visited her sister’s friend’s residence when the assault occurred. The sister and her friend briefly left to run errands, leaving the young girl in the care of her friend’s boyfriend—the accused. During this time, the man sexually assaulted the child.
Upon her sister’s return, the traumatized victim immediately disclosed the attack. She was taken for a medical examination, and a case was opened at the Northam Police Station. The accused was arrested on 10 October 2023 but was later granted bail.
Court’s Sentence and Additional Measures
In addition to the 20-year imprisonment, the court ordered that the convict’s name be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders, barring him from working with children or vulnerable groups. Furthermore, he has been prohibited from possessing firearms under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
