Former and Current Police Officers Sentenced for Attempted Murder and Assault

The eMalahleni Regional Court has sentenced Sergeant Louise Venter (43) and former police officer Sergeant Stefaans Breytenbach (42) to five years’ imprisonment for attempted murder and an additional 18 months for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). The sentences, handed down on 22 May 2025, were imposed without the option of a fine.

The court also declared both officers unfit to possess firearms and denied their application for leave to appeal.

Details of the Incident

The charges stem from an incident on 11 May 2020, when the officers were conducting a roadblock on the N4 near Balmoral. After attempting to stop a vehicle whose driver allegedly failed to comply, a high-speed chase ensued. During the pursuit, the officers reportedly fired multiple shots at the fleeing vehicle until it came to a stop.

Once the vehicle was halted, the officers allegedly assaulted the driver. A case was opened at Vosman Police Station later that day. Both Venter and Breytenbach were stationed at Vosman at the time of the incident.

Investigation and Trial

Following an investigation, the officers were arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to cause GBH. They were released on bail as the trial proceeded.

Breytenbach, who had previously been reinstated to the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2017, resigned on 30 November 2022 after five years of service. Venter remains a serving officer but now faces imprisonment following the court’s ruling.

The sentencing marks the conclusion of a five-year legal process, reinforcing accountability for law enforcement officers who abuse their authority.
