The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed a City Press report claiming that its troops withdrawing from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will be surrendering their weapons. The SANDF described the article as “irresponsible,” “sensationalist,” and designed to incite unnecessary panic.
Defence Corporate Communications Director, Admiral Prince Tshabalala, clarified that no such directive had been issued and emphasized that troop safety remains a top priority. He explained that standard military protocols dictate that weapons are transported as cargo under armed escort, with soldiers temporarily unarmed during transit but still under protection.
Misinformation Could Endanger Troops
Admiral Tshabalala warned that misleading reports could jeopardize soldiers’ safety by creating a false perception of vulnerability. “Our personnel’s safety is paramount,” he stated, urging media to verify facts with the SANDF before publishing.
Phased Withdrawal Underway
The withdrawal follows a ceasefire agreement involving South Africa, Rwanda, and the M23 rebel group. Tshabalala confirmed that over 30 trucks carrying equipment have already crossed into Tanzania without incident. The process is being conducted in phases, with non-essential personnel and cargo returning first.
SIU Probes Defence Procurement Scandal
In a related development, President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe allegations of maladministration in a 2021 surgical mask tender. The investigation will examine whether proper procurement processes were followed and if any officials engaged in misconduct.
The SANDF reassured the public that updates on the withdrawal would be provided as operations progress, urging patience amid the phased repatriation.
