Runners Unite Against Hunger in Northern Cape Charity Event

Local runners laced up their shoes for a 10 to 15-kilometer run this weekend, turning their regular exercise routine into a powerful act of charity. The event, organized by the Kimberley Harriers, aimed to raise awareness and donations for World Hunger Day, highlighting the severe food insecurity plaguing the Northern Cape.

A Run for a Cause

Participants gathered not just for fitness but to support a critical mission. “I just moved to Kimberley and was looking for a nice social event,” said one runner. “I saw the Harriers’ advertisement on Facebook, and it’s for a good cause, so I decided to join in this morning.”

The Northern Cape faces one of the highest child hunger rates in South Africa. A 2022 study revealed that 30% of the province’s population experiences moderate to severe food insecurity. For many runners, the event was a chance to give back.

“If you are a person who has enough to eat for your family, you must also give out to the people,” said another participant.

Community Collaboration

The run also saw collaboration with Meals on Wheels, a local organization fighting hunger. “When we collaborate to fight hunger and poverty, it makes us do more than when we do it alone,” said a representative. “This is something we’ve always wanted—for the community to come together so we can work against these challenges.”

As the donation pile grew, runners urged more people to get involved. “It’s a good thing because people who are hungry don’t have food,” one participant emphasized.

Call to Action

With hunger remaining a pressing issue in the region, the Kimberley Harriers hope this event inspires ongoing support. “We need to keep making a difference,” organizers said.

For those looking to contribute, local charities like Meals on Wheels continue to accept donations and volunteers.
