Seven suspects, aged between 22 and 36, appeared before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, facing charges of extortion and attempted murder. All were granted bail of R1,500 each and are set to return to court on 07 July 2025.

The arrests followed an incident in Steelpoort, under the Burgersfort Policing area, where members of Operation Vala Umgodi were called to a mining site following reports of extortion. It is alleged that the suspects blocked the road with their vehicles and demanded money from a mine truck driver.
Upon arrival, police spotted the suspects, who fled in different directions. Law enforcement managed to apprehend all seven individuals.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the same group was allegedly involved in a similar offense in the same area in April 2025.
