Police in Bushbuckridge have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with the rape and attempted murder of a 36-year-old woman in the Shatale area. The suspect, who was previously out on bail for a prior rape charge, is set to appear in court on Monday.
Swift Police Response Leads to Arrest
According to authorities, the incident came to light in the early hours of Saturday, 31 May 2025, when medical staff at Mapulaneng Hospital alerted the South African Police Service (SAPS) about a severely injured woman. Upon arrival, officers found the victim with extensive facial injuries, rendering her unable to speak due to the trauma.
A rapid investigation was launched, with police gathering witness statements and pursuing leads. It was determined that the victim had last been seen with a known individual in Shatale.
Suspect Apprehended After Confession
Members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, working alongside Bushbuckridge Detectives, tracked down and arrested the suspect shortly after identifying him. During interrogation, the man allegedly confessed to the crime.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had a prior arrest for rape and was out on bail at the time of this attack.
Court Appearance Scheduled
The accused is expected to appear before the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 June 2025, where he will face charges of rape and attempted murder.
Police have commended the collaborative efforts of medical personnel and law enforcement in ensuring a swift arrest. Investigations remain ongoing.
