The diligent efforts of Constable Boitshepo Bele, attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Postmasburg, have been commended by ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, following the lengthy prison sentence handed down to a convicted rapist.
The case dates back to 23 May 2024, when a 29-year-old woman reported that she and her friends were at a local drinking establishment. The accused, 32-year-old Velile Sannie, approached them, offered to buy them alcohol, and later suggested they continue drinking at his residence. The group agreed and went to his home, where they all slept on one bed.
During the night, Sannie began touching the victim without her consent. When she resisted, he assaulted her with a belt. The victim, overpowered and fearing further violence, succumbed, and Sannie proceeded to rape her.
The traumatized woman reported the incident to the police the following day, leading to Sannie’s swift arrest. After a thorough investigation by Constable Bele, the case went to trial, culminating in Sannie’s conviction on 28 May 2025.
The ZF Mgcawu Regional Court sentenced Sannie to 18 years’ imprisonment for rape. Additionally, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, barring him from certain employment and activities involving vulnerable groups.
