The City of Gqeberha is once again preparing to welcome its majestic seasonal visitors—humpback whales—as they migrate along the Eastern Cape coastline. While these gentle giants rarely interact with residents, their arrival creates a breathtaking spectacle for nature lovers.
To mark the occasion, the city hosted its 5th Annual Algoa Bay Whale Festival, a vibrant celebration of marine life, conservation, and local culture. The festival, held over the weekend, combined education, entertainment, and environmental awareness, drawing crowds eager to learn about the whales’ incredible journey.
A Journey of Challenges and Wonder
Each year, humpback whales travel thousands of miles from Antarctica to warmer breeding grounds near the equator, facing numerous challenges along the way. Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) is one of their key stopovers, offering a prime viewing opportunity for locals and tourists.
“The main purpose of this event is to educate the public about whale migration,” said a festival organizer. “Humpbacks leave Antarctica annually, heading north to breed, but many people don’t realize the difficulties they face. Marine conservation is crucial—how can you protect something if you don’t understand it?”
