MK Party Removes Floyd Shivambu as Secretary-General Following Controversial Malawi Trip

The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party has ousted Floyd Shivambu as its secretary-general, citing a violation of the party’s constitution after his controversial trip to Malawi to meet fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri.

The decision was announced at a media briefing in Durban on Wednesday, where the party confirmed that Shivambu had been found guilty of misconduct following an internal investigation. Despite his removal from the leadership position, Shivambu will retain his membership and be redeployed to the National Assembly.

Violation of Party Ethics

Shivambu’s April visit to Malawi, where he met with Bushiri—a self-proclaimed prophet wanted in South Africa for fraud and money laundering—sparked public backlash and condemnation from the MK Party. At the time, Shivambu remained unapologetic, defending his engagement with the controversial pastor.

However, the party’s leadership deemed his actions inconsistent with its values.

“Due to the various nature of this matter and its implications for the party’s image, values, and principles, the president and national officials were left with no other option but to act swiftly,” a party representative stated.

Shivambu Accepts Decision, Vows Loyalty to MK Party

In response to his removal, Shivambu expressed respect for the party’s decision, emphasizing his commitment to its agenda.

“I want to confirm that the national officials have taken a decision which I fully accept as a disciplined member,” he said. “I’ve been redeployed to the National Assembly and will continue to advance the program of MK.”

Shivambu also reaffirmed his loyalty, stating that he would never resign from the party.

“I did not join MK to lead it—I joined to be a member, to campaign for its ideals, vision, and program,” he said.

Leadership Vacancy

The MK Party has not yet announced Shivambu’s replacement as secretary-general. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of the party’s internal discipline and public image.

As Shivambu transitions to parliamentary duties, the party seeks to reinforce its stance on accountability while maintaining unity among its members.
