Martie Du Plessis School in Shock as Learner Abducted by Fake Officers

Free State police have launched a manhunt for 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi, a Grade 11 learner from Martie Du Plessis School in Fichardtpark, Bloemfontein, after he was allegedly kidnapped by two men impersonating police officers.

Abduction Details

According to authorities, the incident occurred yesterday around 11:55 AM when Baukudi’s usual transport driver picked him up from school. On their way home, a Toyota Hilux with blue lights stopped them. Two men—one in police uniform and the other in civilian clothing—claimed they suspected the vehicle was transporting drugs.

The suspects confiscated both the driver’s and Baukudi’s cellphones before instructing the driver to proceed to Bakenpark Police Station, claiming they would follow. However, the driver lost sight of the Hilux after a truck obstructed his view. Upon arriving at the station, he reported the incident, realizing Baukudi had been taken.

Police later recovered the two cellphones near the scene. Witnesses noted that one suspect spoke Sesotho fluently.

School and Community Reaction

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Education, expressed shock over the incident, confirming that psychosocial support has been provided to affected learners and staff. A prayer session will be held at the school at 6:00 PM today.

Ndaba urged parents and transport operators to remain vigilant, citing rising kidnapping cases. Martie Du Plessis is a school for learners with special needs, heightening concerns over Baukudi’s safety.

Community Fears Grow

The abduction has sparked fear among Bloemfontein residents, with some parents claiming their children reported similar attempted kidnappings in recent weeks. The case has drawn parallels to the unsolved 2023 disappearance of Lerato Masiu, who was also allegedly taken by fake police officers.

Ongoing Investigation

Free State police have activated search efforts and are appealing for public assistance. No ransom demands have been reported. Authorities are investigating whether the abduction is linked to a broader syndicate.

Updates will follow as the investigation unfolds.
