The Gauteng government has launched a community outreach programme aimed at improving food security and safety, particularly in response to recent incidents of contaminated food linked to child fatalities. The initiative comes ahead of World Food Safety Day, observed globally on June 7.
Contaminated Food Outbreaks Prompt Action
During the outreach in Soweto, officials highlighted the urgency of addressing food safety concerns following multiple cases of poisoning, particularly among schoolchildren. Reports indicate that 10 out of 30 recorded cases in Naledi were fatal, with investigations pointing to chemical contamination rather than typical food spoilage.
A representative from the City of Johannesburg confirmed that authorities have been conducting regular inspections at food premises, including spaza shops and distributors, for over a year. Nearly 1,000 food samples have been sent to laboratories in Pretoria for analysis, with non-compliant products flagged under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act (FCD Act).
Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration
The initiative involves cooperation between:
-
Environmental Health (City of Johannesburg)
-
South African Police Service (SAPS)
-
Department of Agriculture
-
National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS)
-
Department of Education
Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with delays attributed to autopsy reports and lab analyses.
Long-Term Food Safety Plans
Officials stressed the importance of continuous monitoring, particularly in schools and informal food vendors. “We are not only targeting spaza shops but the entire food supply chain,” said a Johannesburg health representative. “We work with manufacturers and distributors to ensure compliance before products reach consumers.”
As the programme continues, stakeholders, including SAPS and the Department of Health, are expected to outline further measures to prevent future outbreaks.
With World Food Safety Day approaching, Gauteng’s efforts underscore the critical need for stricter food regulations and public awareness to safeguard vulnerable communities.
