‘If we need a Bomb Squad, we’re in more trouble than we thought’ – DA Johannesburg

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has sharply criticized Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero’s newly unveiled “Bomb Squad,” calling it an opaque and questionable initiative. The team, assembled to address the city’s crumbling infrastructure and failing service delivery, includes former city officials with controversial track records—raising concerns over accountability and political bias.

DA Questions Credibility of Mayor’s Team

During an interview DA caucus leader Belinda Echeozonjoku slammed the Bomb Squad’s formation, demanding clarity on its selection process, vetting, and terms of reference.

“How are they selected? How are they vetted? Are they subject to the city’s recruitment policies?” Echeozonjoku asked. “The mayor has brought ANC politics into the city by appointing retired ANC members without proper oversight.”

She further accused Morero of bypassing council procedures, noting that no formal report or budget allocation for the Bomb Squad had been presented to councilors for approval.

Motion of No Confidence Looms

The DA has submitted a motion of no confidence against Morero, citing his “rogue” leadership and failure to respond to official correspondence. Echeozonjoku claimed that even members of the mayor’s own party had privately pledged support for the motion—on condition of anonymity—due to fears of reprisal.

“If those who approached us stick to their word, the mayor will be out,” she said, adding that the DA is pushing for a secret ballot to ensure a fair vote.

Mayoral Ambitions and Political Tensions

The interview also touched on potential leadership changes, with Echeozonjoku confirming her own interest in running for mayor. She criticized Morero’s administration as ineffective, stating: “If we need a Bomb Squad, we’re in more trouble than we thought.”

Meanwhile, Morero has defended the initiative as a necessary intervention to salvage Johannesburg’s deteriorating services. However, with the DA and other councilors challenging its legality and transparency, the political battle over the city’s governance is set to escalate.

As tensions rise, all eyes are on the upcoming council vote—which could determine whether Morero retains his position or Johannesburg sees yet another leadership shake-up.
