Ficksburg, Eastern Free State – As a relentless cold front continues to grip parts of South Africa, residents in the eastern Free State are resorting to alternative heating methods to stay warm, causing a surge in wood and paraffin sales.
In Meqheleng, Ficksburg, locals say they are doing everything possible to endure the freezing temperatures. The prolonged cold snap has forced many to rely on firewood and paraffin stoves, especially amid concerns over electricity shortages and overloading of the power grid.
A reporter reporting from Maluti-a-Phofung, described the ongoing icy conditions, noting that the municipality is taking steps to address potential electricity crises. Municipal Manager Moai confirmed that the area has historically faced power outages during winter due to illegal connections and overloading.
To mitigate the issue, the municipality has stockpiled 37 new transformers and is collaborating with Eskom to improve electricity supply. Plans are also underway to introduce smart meters in an effort to curb non-payment and illegal usage.
Despite these measures, residents continue to face harsh conditions, with no immediate relief in sight. Authorities urge communities to exercise caution when using heating alternatives to prevent fires and other hazards.
The South African Weather Service has warned that the cold front will persist, advising people to stay warm and monitor updates.
