The family of Jimmy Mukwevho, a 43-year-old man kidnapped in December 2022, says they are enduring unbearable trauma as his whereabouts remain unknown nearly three years later.
Mukwevho was allegedly abducted by a group of men in his home village of Mandiwana, near Louis Trichardt. His vehicle was later recovered in Vuani, approximately 120 kilometers away, but there has been no trace of him since.
Three suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping, but police have yet to uncover any leads on Mukwevho’s fate. His family, including his children, wife, and elderly mother, say they are living in constant distress, struggling to cope with the uncertainty.
“It’s Mindblowing”: A Family’s Anguish
Zachariah Mukwevho, Jimmy’s brother, described the emotional toll on the family. “It is a mindblowing issue. I don’t know how to explain to those kids where their father is,” he said. “They have heard stories from people in the community, and it pains them. It really, really pains them. They are traumatized.”
Jimmy’s mother has been particularly devastated. “The mother is very worse because she even gets sick,” Zachary said. “There were times she would just cry because of this issue.”
Community in Fear
Local leaders in Mandiwana say the unresolved case has left the village on edge. A community representative expressed their despair, saying, “We are crying over Jimmy. It would have been better if he was found dead because we would have buried him. We still live in fear since he disappeared. We ask ourselves, who is next?”
Limpopo’s Kidnapping Crisis
The Mukwevho case highlights a broader crisis in Limpopo, where kidnappings have surged. Police statistics reveal that the province recorded 168 kidnapping cases in the first quarter of 2025 alone, with the Sekhukhune and Vhembe districts being the worst affected.
Authorities have yet to provide updates on the investigation into Mukwevho’s disappearance, leaving his family desperate for answers. For now, they continue to live in anguish, hoping for closure—one way or another.
