Tensions flared in Meadowlands, Soweto, yesterday as residents took to the streets in protest over prolonged power outages, blocking roads with burning tires and stones. The demonstration, which disrupted traffic and led to confrontations with taxi operators, has since calmed, though frustrations remain high.
Community Outcry Over Months-Long Blackouts
Residents expressed anger over what they say has been months without electricity, accusing Eskom of neglecting their pleas for assistance. The protest turned volatile as demonstrators barricaded key roads, including Modisa Street and routes near Orlando Police Station, severely impacting commuters and taxi services.
A representative from a local taxi association pleaded with protesters to allow at least one lane for vehicles, citing financial strain on drivers who rely on daily fares. However, residents refused, demanding Eskom address the power crisis first.
Eskom Responds: Cable Faults and Suspended Repairs
An Eskom spokesperson acknowledged the outages, attributing them to a faulty cable. She stated that technicians had attempted repairs but were forced to suspend work due to debris blocking access.
“We had to suspend services because our teams couldn’t safely reach the affected area,” Titi said, adding that restoration efforts would resume once conditions allowed.
Police Intervention and Lingering Tensions
Metro police were deployed to monitor the situation, though no clashes were reported. By this morning, roads had reopened, but community leaders warned of further action if power is not restored promptly.
As Eskom works to resolve the issue, residents remain skeptical, with many vowing to continue protests until their demands are met. The incident highlights ongoing service delivery challenges in Soweto, where infrastructure failures frequently spark unrest.
