The community of Eldorado Park is reeling after the grim discovery of severely burnt human remains in an open veld in Extension 6. The body, found on Thursday, was so badly charred that identification was impossible at the scene.
Police have since transported the remains to a state mortuary for DNA testing to determine the victim’s identity. An inquest docket has been opened, with authorities not ruling out the possibility of murder.
Community in Shock, Demands Action
Ward 18 Councillor Juwairiya Kaldine expressed deep concern over the incident, highlighting ongoing issues with crime and inadequate policing in the area.
“We are constantly left with heartbreak and sorrow,” Kaldine said. “SAPS is unable to give us answers, but two families have come forward, reporting loved ones missing for about three months.”
She criticized local law enforcement, accusing some officers of being “on the payroll of criminals” and failing to protect residents. The community, she said, is now considering drastic measures—including turning the open field into an informal settlement—to improve safety, as children frequently pass through the area to get to school.
Broader Concerns Over Crime and Neglect
Residents lamented the lack of government intervention in crime-ridden areas like Eldorado Park, with Kaldine questioning whether systemic neglect disproportionately affects Black and Coloured communities.
“There’s no justice system today,” she said, ahead of a visit by the Minister of Justice. “We need action, not just promises.”
Police have yet to confirm any leads but are urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, the community remains on edge, awaiting answers as DNA tests continue.
