A 43-year-old city law enforcement officer, Thandile Khesa, is set to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court today in connection with a harrowing kidnap-for-ransom and murder case. Khesa, along with four co-accused, allegedly lured a man through an online car sale advertisement before abducting and killing him.
Details of the Case
According to investigators, the victim, a man from Kraaifontein, responded to an online ad for a car on May 16. He was picked up by Khesa in a municipal-branded vehicle, presumably under the guise of finalizing the purchase. Instead, he was taken hostage, and his family was demanded a ransom of R100,000.
When the family could not pay the full amount, the kidnappers reduced the demand to R5,000, which was paid. Tragically, the victim was later found dead.
Arrests and Investigation
Police tracked down the four co-accused—Mogamat Samuels, Thokozani Kamnjunga, Existing Mudivari, and Yasseen Jele—in Philippi and Kraaifontein. The suspects led authorities to a shallow grave between Monwabisi beach and Macassar, where the victim’s body was discovered.
Rising Kidnapping Trend
This case highlights a disturbing national trend, with recent crime statistics revealing over 4,200 kidnappings across South Africa. While KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng report the highest numbers, the Western Cape has also seen an alarming increase in such crimes.
Khesa, who is applying for bail today, faces serious charges, including kidnapping and murder. The case has drawn significant attention as it involves a law enforcement officer allegedly exploiting his position in a violent crime.
The court proceedings will continue as authorities work to secure justice for the victim and his family.
