Tragic Bus Crash Claims 12 Lives in KwaZulu-Natal, Dozens Injured

A devastating collision between a bus and a truck on the R34 near Vryheid in northern KwaZulu-Natal has left 12 people dead and at least 10 others seriously injured, authorities confirmed early this morning.

Details of the Accident

The crash occurred just after midnight, with emergency services rushing to the scene. According to traffic officials, the bus—reportedly carrying supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)—collided with a truck, though the exact cause remains unclear. Both drivers sustained injuries and were among those hospitalized.

KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya provided updates, stating that six passengers escaped unharmed, while 22 others suffered minor injuries. The most critically injured were transported to nearby hospitals in the Zululand district.

Investigation Underway

Sibiya emphasized that a full investigation is being conducted by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the South African Police Service (SAPS). Authorities are also coordinating with political party leaders to confirm the identities of the victims before notifying their families.

“The MEC has expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and we are ensuring proper protocols are followed,” Sibiya said. He added that mortuary arrangements were being finalized for the deceased.

Road Closure and Traffic Advisory

The R34, a key logistics route connecting KwaZulu-Natal to neighboring provinces and countries, remains partially closed. Motorists are advised to expect delays as authorities implement a stop-and-go system managed by the Road Traffic Inspectorate.

Condolences and Further Updates

As the community mourns the tragic loss, officials have urged patience while investigations continue. More details, including the bus’s intended destination, are expected once the preliminary report is finalized.

This marks one of the deadliest road accidents in the province this year, raising renewed concerns over road safety as the winter holiday season begins.

Updates to follow.
