New Housing Project to Replace Mud Houses in Free State Towns

A major housing initiative is underway to replace more than 260 mud houses in the Free State towns of Qwaqwa and Thaba Nchu, the Department of Human Settlements has announced.

The project, officially launched in Qwaqwa, will see the outdated and vulnerable mud structures eradicated and replaced with new homes constructed using Innovative Building Technologies (IBT).

A spokesperson for the Free State Department of Human Settlements confirmed that construction is scheduled to begin next month. The first beneficiaries are expected to receive their new homes from December this year.

The building process is set to be remarkably swift, with each house taking between just 8 and 10 days to complete. For the 2025-2026 financial year, the department has planned the construction of approximately 138 of these new houses in the Qwaqwa area alone.
