Widespread community protests erupted in the Merafong Municipality on Tuesday, with residents from multiple towns demanding the immediate resignation of the mayor and municipal manager over chronic service delivery failures and alleged corruption.
The protest, which saw participants from Carletonville, Fochville, and other surrounding areas, converged on the local municipality with the primary goal of handing over a memorandum of demands. The document is intended for high-ranking officials, including Cooperative Governance Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
A central grievance voiced by the community is the complete lack of water, which residents state has persisted for over five months. According to protesters, this crisis is a direct result of financial mismanagement by the municipality, which has accrued massive debt to Eskom, the national power utility.
“The community has been crying about the service delivery issues with regard to water,” said one community leader during the demonstration. “You know by now there’s a lot of money that this municipality is owing… We’ve got issues of electricity. We’ve got issues of service delivery in all aspects.”
The protest caused significant disruptions, with roads being blocked and traffic brought to a standstill. The situation required police and traffic officials to intervene to control movement and verify the identities of teachers and learners attempting to reach schools.
The community’s demands are unequivocal: they want Executive Mayor Nouko Best and the Municipal Manager to vacate their offices immediately.
“These people are corrupt. They are corrupt. In fact, they are supposed to be in jail as we speak now,” the community leader stated, accusing the municipal leadership of systemic corruption. “We don’t want them anymore as a community.”
When asked what would happen if the mayor and manager refused to resign, the community leader promised an escalation of demonstrations. “The community is not going to budge anymore… We will come every day to tell them that they don’t belong to those offices,” he said.
The protest highlights a deep-seated frustration with the ANC-led local government, which residents accuse of being “arrogant” and ignoring the principle of serving the people. The planned delivery of the memorandum to Minister Hlabisa and Commissioner Masemola is seen as an appeal for higher government intervention to address the alleged corruption and service collapse in Merafong.
