Major Traffic Disruptions Hit Gauteng for G20 Summit Dry Run

Motorists across Gauteng faced significant traffic disruptions this past weekend due to a large-scale “dry run” conducted by authorities in preparation for the upcoming G20 leaders summit. The logistical exercise is impacting key routes in the metropolitan municipalities of Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Ekurhuleni.

The dry run, a full-scale rehearsal for the high-profile international event scheduled for next month, began its operational phase yesterday. According to officials, the planning for this joint operation has been underway for approximately three months. While the disruption was particularly pronounced during the busy weekday traffic on Friday, the weekend has not provided the usual respite for drivers.

The dry run involves officials traveling along designated routes, including a currently busy but free-flowing stretch that was imminently scheduled for closure. While the City of Johannesburg maintains that it has effectively communicated with residents about alternative routes, the exercise is still expected to cause considerable inconvenience.

Compounding the traffic challenges, the City of Johannesburg is also bracing for the annual Ride Johannesburg cycling race, an event known to significantly influence traffic flows.
