Police have opened a case of culpable homicide following a devastating head-on collision on the N1 between Winburg and Ventersburg that claimed five lives on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 17:40 on 26 October 2025. Winburg police were dispatched to the scene where they discovered a Blue Volkswagen Polo Vivo and a maroon Toyota Avanza, both with passengers trapped inside.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions before the collision.
Emergency services certified four individuals dead at the scene: three adult females and one adult male. The adult male driver of one of the vehicles later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
In addition to the fatalities, five passengers sustained serious injuries. The injured include two adult males, one adult female, and two minor males. They were transported to various hospitals for medical treatment.
Police confirmed that the circumstances leading to the accident will form a central part of their ongoing investigation.
