14 Dead After Night time Fire Sweeps Through Bukavu

A devastating nighttime fire ravaged the working-class Funu neighborhood of Bukavu, claiming the lives of 14 members of two families and leaving a community in despair amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the rebel-controlled city.

The blaze broke out overnight, reducing several homes to ashes. By Monday morning, the smoldering aftermath revealed a scene of utter destruction, as volunteers from the Red Cross and local youth worked solemnly through the charred debris of collapsed houses to recover the remains of the victims.

One resident, who escaped the flames, described the horror. “When I heard noises, I woke up to check what was happening. I saw the fire and managed to escape. When I came back, I saw that 14 people had died.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Witnesses described a ferocious blaze that trapped inhabitants inside their homes. “When I saw the staircase engulfed in flames, those on the upper floor could no longer flee,” said another local witness. “The flames then reached the roof structure and the ensuing heat claimed the lives of those who were trapped.”

The victims were reported to be mostly women and children, who stood little chance against the speed and intensity of the fire.

The tragedy has cast a spotlight on the precarious living conditions in Bukavu, a city of more than three million people where fires are a recurring danger. The city’s rapid and unregulated urbanization, characterized by makeshift electrical wiring and the use of flammable building materials, often turns simple homes into death traps when a fire ignites.

Amid the grief, survivors pleaded for assistance. “We have lost so much and we are grieving,” said one affected resident. “Our concern is that the government comes to help us because we have nothing left.”

The disaster is further complicated by the city’s political situation. Bukavu is under the control of the AFCM23 rebel group, which has pledged to provide the victims with a dignified burial. The group’s spokesperson confirmed their commitment to overseeing the funerals.

This latest incident serves as a stark wake-up call to the broader humanitarian and infrastructural challenges facing the Democratic Republic of Congo, as the community of Bukavu mourns its dead.
