The Pixley Ka Seme District Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, has welcomed the 10-year prison sentence handed down by the Prieska Regional Court to a 44-year-old man convicted of rape.
The conviction stems from an incident on Sunday, 12 December 2019, when the accused, who was known to the 19-year-old female victim as the boyfriend of her aunt, accosted her. The Court heard that the man offered to accompany the victim home.
During the journey, the assailant pushed the victim into a ditch and sexually assaulted her. The victim was ultimately rescued by a passerby, but the accused managed to flee the scene.
He was later arrested by police. The Prieska Regional Court subsequently sentenced him to 10 years of direct imprisonment. In addition to the prison term, the court declared the convict unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his name be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
