The decommissioning and cleaning of a multi-million rand clandestine drug laboratory is expected to be completed by Friday, 31 October 2025, bringing an end to a significant health and safety hazard in the area.
The illicit operation was first uncovered by police on 19 September 2025, following reports from the community about a strong, unpleasant smell emanating from the location.
A subsequent police operation led to the arrest of six suspects. Five are Mexican nationals, and one is a South African citizen. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the Hawks’ Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit for further handling.
In court proceedings, the investigative team worked diligently to oppose bail. This effort resulted in the five Mexican nationals abandoning their bail applications. The South African suspect, who is alleged to have been the farm’s caretaker, was granted bail of R50,000.
As a critical part of the investigation, the Hawks initiated the process of decommissioning and cleaning the premises, which was used for the illegal manufacturing of drugs. The site was declared a health hazard to the public and the environment, with a high risk of causing fires due to chemical reactions. It has been under constant police guard from the day of the initial raid until the start of the decommissioning process.
Authorities have confirmed that all chemicals and equipment used in the illegal operation will be safely disposed of. This disposal will mark a complete shutdown of the dangerous facility.
“Our investigation is still ongoing. We will leave no stone unturned until we get the masterminds behind this illegal operation,” said Major General Nico Gerber, the Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga.
