The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has welcomed the lengthy prison sentence handed down to 39-year-old Thabiso Juel Sekamoeng for the brutal murder of his girlfriend.
The Northern Cape High Court, sitting in Kathu, heard that the fatal incident occurred on Saturday, 11 January 2025. The victim, 34-year-old Lerato Cathrine Ntaolang, was visiting the accused at his residence in Dithakong village when an argument broke out between them.
During the altercation, Sekamoeng struck Ntaolang on the head with a sharp object. He then fled the scene, leaving her in a pool of blood. Emergency Medical Services personnel were called but declared the victim deceased at the scene.
The incident was reported to the Bothithong Police Station, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect on the same day. He was charged with murder.
The case was assigned to Detective Constable Lucky Mabuthwane, whose meticulous investigation was pivotal in securing the conviction. Detective Constable Mabuthwane successfully opposed bail, ensuring the accused remained in custody throughout the trial proceedings.
The court subsequently convicted Sekamoeng and sentenced him to 25 years of direct imprisonment. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
