A community in Naledi, Soweto, is united in grief following the death of a young woman who was allegedly stabbed to death by her partner last Wednesday.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, as both the victim and the alleged perpetrator were well-known residents who grew up in the area. According to the South African Police Service, the suspect has since been arrested.
The tragedy comes amidst national mourning for other recent victims of gender-based violence, a point underscored by reporters covering the story who noted the recent funeral of the Moramaga cousins.
A Bishop and youth activist and community leader familiar with the couple, expressed the collective devastation. “We are definitely shocked by this incident,” he stated. “We know [the suspect], we grew with him. He was not a violent person. He was just a sweet boy, a quiet boy. We were just shocked with what had just occurred. Even [the victim] was just a quiet girl.”
The bishop highlighted the profound tragedy facing the couple’s young daughter, who has now lost both parents—one to violence and the other to incarceration. “We are just crying with this little child,” he said. “The families are broken, both of them. The community is… we don’t even have words.”
He described the family’s state as one of profound distress, noting they are “not coping” and are “in tears all of them.” A church service was scheduled to be held at the family home to offer comfort.
He confirmed that the arrest of the suspect has brought a degree of comfort to the family, though it cannot undo their loss. He also revealed the community’s initial reaction, with members urging the suspect to hand himself over to the police before the community could take the law into its own hands. This was driven, he explained, not by a desire to protect a murderer, but by the community’s struggle to reconcile the alleged crime with the character of the person they thought they knew.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Naledi Magistrates’ Court tomorrow. As the legal process begins, the community of Naledi is left to mourn and support a grieving family, while grappling with the unsettling reality of violence within its midst.
