A 68-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, 04 November 2025, by the Johannesburg-based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in connection with a violent cash-in-transit robbery that occurred nearly four years ago.
The suspect faces charges of cash-in-transit robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, and possession of explosives.
According to police allegations, the incident took place on 05 March 2021 at approximately 17:43 on Lower Germiston Road in Cleveland. An armoured cash vehicle was attacked and bombed. The assailants disarmed the security officials of their pistols before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
The breakthrough in the case came when police received information linking a Ford Ranger bakkie used in the robbery to a specific company. Officers followed up on the lead and visited the company, where the manager confirmed that the vehicle had been in the possession of the suspect on the day of the incident.
Further investigation by the Hawks culminated in the suspect’s arrest in Johannesburg. He is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 05 November 2025.
