It is not every day that a young student reminds you what persistence truly looks like. This year, Grade 4 student Jivana Bisetty has done exactly that. Her achievements in national Mathematics competitions have captured the attention of audiences across South Africa, earning her standing ovations that speak louder than any certificate ever could.
Although Jivana is visually impaired, she approaches Mathematics with curiosity and calm focus. She treats each question as a puzzle, breaking it down, trying again when needed and allowing herself to learn through mistakes.
Earlier this year she competed in the National Abagility Abacus Tournament in Rustenburg where she earned a Silver medal in Level 10 Kyu. Term 2 saw her progress through the second round of the South African Maths Challenge. Term 3 brought an even fuller schedule with the Beyond Maths Competition and the SAMC final round at Kearsney College. Balancing Music, Maths and friendships left little room to breathe, and she admits she felt overwhelmed at times. Still, she pushed through.
Her determination led to two standout achievements. She was named the Top Grade 4 student in the Beyond Maths Competition, placing eighth in KZN in the Level 1 category. She also secured a Top 10 national position in the Junior division at the SAMC awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
Public relations consultant, Unathi Bonga, who works alongside the school’s communication team, shared her thoughts on Jivana’s success: “Her journey reminds us that courage often shows itself quietly. Jivana is proof that talent paired with determination creates its own path, and we are so proud of her.”
Jivana leaves her peers with a message that reflects her spirit:
“My love for Mathematics has inspired me to try harder examples and make mistakes along the way. I learn by making mistakes. If you are passionate about something then you are already a winner.”
