Man Sentenced to Life for Attempted Murder of Girlfriend

The Tzaneen Regional Court has handed down a life sentence to 41-year-old Matome Modiba for the attempted murder of his 39-year-old girlfriend in a violent attack that occurred in November 2023.

The court heard that on the morning of 12 November 2023, the victim left her home in Segwashi, Nyakelang Section, and travelled to her workplace by minibus. Upon her arrival at approximately 07:30, she was confronted by Modiba, who was waiting in his white Ford Ranger bakkie.

An argument ensued between the couple. During the altercation, Modiba produced a firearm. As the victim attempted to get into the passenger seat of the vehicle, Modiba pulled her out. He then shot her, striking her in the hip and spinal region, before driving away and leaving her lying on the ground.

Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

An attempted murder case was immediately opened at the Haenertsburg Police Station and assigned to Detective Sergeant Daniel Molepo of the Detectives Unit. Through diligent investigative work, Modiba was arrested on the same day at his residence in Mountain View, Ga-Molepo village.

The investigation led to the recovery of critical evidence, including the firearm used in the crime and Modiba’s white Ford Ranger, which was found with bloodstains on the passenger seat.

Detective Sergeant Molepo successfully opposed bail, ensuring Modiba remained in custody throughout the court proceedings.

On 10 November 2025, the Tzaneen Regional Court convicted Modiba and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
