Mpumalanga Police Welcome Sentences in 2019 Fatal Stabbing

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has welcomed the substantial prison sentences handed down to two men for the brutal 2019 murder of 20-year-old Bhekokuhle Mahlaba.

On Wednesday, 13 November 2024, the Regional Court in Amersfoort sentenced Scelo Sicelumusa Kubheka (30) to life imprisonment for the murder. His co-accused, Mbuyiseni Ludrick Khoza (25), received a 20-year prison term. Both offenders were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The sentencing brings closure to a case that began on the night of 2 February 2019. Police in Daggakraal responded to a report of a seriously injured man on Sinqobile Street just before midnight. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim, Bhekokuhle Mahlaba, lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds to his upper body. Paramedics later declared him dead at the scene.

A thorough investigation pieced together the events leading to the tragedy. Earlier that evening, around 20:00, Kubheka and Khoza were part of a group of five that provoked Mahlaba and caused a disturbance at a local tavern. In an effort to avoid confrontation, Mahlaba left the establishment, while his friend went home.

However, the accused pursued Mahlaba to another tavern, where they again incited violence and threatened patrons with knives and pangas. Mahlaba eventually left this second location, but the group continued to follow him.

Growing concerned when Mahlaba did not arrive home as planned, his family raised the alarm. His friend went to search for him and tragically witnessed the accused stabbing Mahlaba. The friend ran to seek help, and upon returning, found that police were already on the scene.

The investigation led to the swift arrest of the accused. The SAPS has commended the diligent work of the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Elijah Thusi, whose efforts were instrumental in ensuring that justice was served for the victim and his family.
