In a targeted operation on Friday, 14 November 2025, law enforcement authorities arrested three individuals believed to be part of a criminal syndicate terrorizing local businesses.
The intelligence-led operation was launched following credible information about an extortion group targeting community members in Mfuleni. According to reports, the group has been systematically extorting money from spaza shop and tavern owners, as well as other businesses, within the Covid Informal Settlement.
Investigations further revealed that the criminal network’s operations are not confined to Mfuleni. The group is also alleged to be active in other areas, including Philippi East, Nyanga, Delft, and Khayelitsha.
Beyond extortion, the suspects are linked to more severe crimes. “It is further alleged that the group is involved in armed robberies and other serious and violent crimes,” a statement from authorities read.
During the operation, firearms were recovered from the suspects. The weapons will now undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes in the wider Cape Town area.

The three suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face charges of extortion and armed robbery.
