Fighting Intensifies in Eastern DRC, Breaking Days-Old Peace Deal with Rwanda

Intense fighting between the Congolese army (FARDC) and M23 rebels has forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes in South Kivu province, violating a peace agreement signed just days earlier.

The combat escalated on Tuesday, with clashes concentrated in the areas of Katagota, Kamanola, and their surroundings. Fierce fighting continued into Saturday morning around Lavongi in the Ruzizi plain. Local sources report that approximately 20 civilians have been killed in the recent violence.

This surge in hostilities comes directly after a diplomatic meeting aimed at ending the conflict. On Thursday, the leaders of the DRC and Rwanda signed an agreement recommitting to a peace deal. That ceasefire has not held, with both the FARDC and the M23 accusing each other of initiating the new attacks.

The breakdown has triggered a mass displacement of civilians. Residents from villages in South Kivu are seen carrying belongings as they flee the conflict zone.

“The M23 and the Congolese army are dropping many bombs on Lungi,” said one displaced man. “Since the day before yesterday, they have caused numerous deaths. Yesterday, people were killed in my neighborhood, which is why we decided to flee today.”

Another fleeing woman, traveling with her children, appealed for help. “We are walking to you, Vera. May the authorities help put an end to this war. We want to go back home and live like everyone else. Many people have died because of the bombings. I survived with my children.”

The renewed fighting underscores the fragility of peace efforts in eastern DRC, where a lasting ceasefire has repeatedly failed to take hold despite international and regional diplomatic engagements.
