In a decisive two-day operation this week, the South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) targeted contraband within two correctional facilities, resulting in significant seizures and the imposition of additional charges on inmates.
The operation commenced on Monday, 8 December 2025, at the Heidelberg Correctional Facility. Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Arends, the AGU, in collaboration with the facility’s management, Communications Department, Emergency Support Team (EST), and various SAPS units, conducted an extensive search. Over 100 inmates were screened, leading to the confiscation of a wide array of illegal items. These included cellphones, chargers, earphones, a laptop, cash, dagga, tattoo machines, and various unauthorized grocery items.

The AGU continued its efforts on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, at the Boksburg Correctional Facility. There, approximately 150 inmates were searched. This operation yielded further contraband, including multiple cellphones, a mini hi-fi system, chargers, a knife, assorted grocery items, dagga, and cash. Inmates found in possession of these items face further disciplinary charges.
