Four Arrested in Delmas Gold Bust and Bribery Attempt

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement team intercepted a vehicle and arrested four foreign nationals in separate but related incidents early Monday morning, recovering unwrought gold valued at approximately R800,000.

The operation began during a routine patrol on the N12 route near the Delmas off-ramp. Officers observed a white Toyota Fortuner displaying no registration plates on either side. Upon stopping and searching the vehicle, they discovered unwrought precious metal, believed to be gold, concealed inside a white plastic bag.

Three male occupants of the vehicle, all Mozambican nationals aged between 24 and 34, were immediately arrested. They face charges for possession of unwrought gold and for failing to produce valid documentation to be in South Africa.

While the three suspects were being processed at the Delmas police station around 02:00, a further arrest was made. A 27-year-old Zimbabwean national approached an officer and offered a R5,000 bribe to secure the release of the detained men. He was arrested on the spot and charged with bribery.

All four accused are scheduled to appear before the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 December 2025, to face the respective charges.
