Police Recover R600,000 Cargo, Arrest Truck Driver After False Hijacking Report

Police have arrested a truck driver and another man, recovering stolen cargo valued at R600,000, following a false hijacking report.

The 35-year-old driver reported his truck hijacked at the George Police Station on Saturday, 13 December 2025. A joint operation involving the George Crime Prevention Unit, neighbourhood watches, and community safety groups located the abandoned vehicle on Caledon Road.

Further investigation led police to a premises on Omega Street, where they found 54 boxes of stolen cigarettes. A 22-year-old occupant was arrested for possession of stolen property. Police determined the cargo was sold to him by the truck driver, who was then also arrested.

Both suspects, aged 22 and 35, are in custody and are expected to appear in the George Magistrates’ Court today, 17 December 2025. They face charges of perjury, theft, and possession of stolen property.
