Senior Russian Military Official Killed in Moscow Car Bombing

A high-ranking Russian general was assassinated in a targeted car bombing in a southern Moscow parking lot on Monday morning, according to local investigative authorities. Officials state that Ukrainian intelligence services are a primary line of inquiry in the attack.

The explosion occurred at approximately 7 a.m. local time, detonating beneath the vehicle of Lieutenant General Fanil Savarov. Savarov served as the head of the operational training directorate of the Russian armed forces general staff, a key position within the military hierarchy.

In a statement released following the attack, an official from the Investigative Committee of Russia confirmed, “We have opened a criminal case in connection with a car bombing in Moscow that killed Lieutenant General Fanil Savarov.”

The Russian Defense Ministry provided background on the deceased officer, noting that Savarov was a veteran of conflicts in Chechnya and had participated in Russia’s military campaign in Syria.

While the investigation remains ongoing, authorities signaled a probable connection to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of inquiry. One is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” the investigative spokesperson stated.

This incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on Russian soil that the Kremlin has attributed to Ukraine. A similar car bomb attack killed a senior Russian soldier last December, an operation for which Kyiv claimed responsibility. As recently as April, another top military official was killed in a nearly identical manner in the capital.

The assassination of Lieutenant General Savarov represents a significant breach of security within Moscow and underscores the expanding shadow war between the two nations far from the front lines in Ukraine. No statement has yet been issued by Ukrainian officials regarding Monday’s attack.
