U.S. President Threatens Further Military Strikes in Nigeria

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated there could be more U.S. military strikes in Nigeria if Christians are killed there. He made the statement in an interview with the New York Times.

This follows a U.S. military strike in Nigeria on Christmas Day. The White House said that strike targeted Daesh militants in the country’s northwest and was conducted at the request of the Nigerian government. A Nigerian government spokesperson described it as a joint operation against terrorists.

The Nigerian government rejects the assertion that Christians face systematic persecution. A spokesperson for Abuja stated that militants have killed both Muslims and Christians. Nigeria’s population is roughly equally divided between the two religions.

The country faces repeated security issues, including violence and kidnappings by Islamic insurgents in the north.
