The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of Jan Bandile Dael, 51, to 22 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of his 63-year-old friend, Pieter Bester.
The fatal incident occurred on the evening of 11 January 2025 at approximately 20:00 at Bester’s residence. Dael and his wife were socializing with the victim and consuming alcohol when a heated argument erupted between the two men.
The argument escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, Dael went to a storeroom, retrieved a garden fork, and used it to assault Bester. The victim collapsed in front of the garage.
Following the assault, Dael and his wife left the injured Bester at the scene and returned to their own home. The couple only returned the following morning, finding Bester deceased in the same spot where he had fallen.
Although the pair subsequently alerted neighbors and reported the death to police, an investigation by the Serious and Violent Crime, Murder and Robbery Unit uncovered the violent truth. Detective Sergeant Greef led the investigation, which conclusively linked Dael to the crime.
The Bethlehem Regional Court found Jan Bandile Dael guilty of murder. He has been sentenced to serve 22 years in a correctional facility.
