A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation resulted in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R455,000 on Friday.
According to police reports, the operation was initiated on Friday, 06 March 2026, at approximately 12:30. Members received a tip-off from Gauteng Provincial Crime Intelligence regarding a truck suspected of transporting illicit cigarettes along the R57 route connecting Gauteng and the Free State.
Acting on the intelligence, law enforcement teams tracked the vehicle. The truck, which displayed Gauteng registration plates, was located at a plot in Vanderbijlpark.
Upon searching the vehicle, members discovered a large quantity of illicit cigarettes. The contraband is estimated to have a street value of approximately R455,000.
A 33-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene and is currently in custody on charges of possessing illicit cigarettes.

The suspect is scheduled to make his first appearance before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 March 2026. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
