Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Rape of Minor

The Springs Magistrate Court has sentenced Nelson Gumede (28) to life imprisonment following his conviction for the rape of a 14-year-old girl. The sentencing was welcomed by Ekurhuleni District Commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole.

The court found Gumede guilty based on compelling evidence presented by the investigating officer, Sergeant Kenneth Siyabonga Radebe of the Springs Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

According to testimony, on 23 October 2022, the accused instructed the victim to purchase a cold drink from a store. Upon her return, he locked her inside a shack and raped her.

The victim’s sister observed her leaving the accused’s residence and inquired about the incident. The victim initially denied any assault but disclosed the rape three days later. A case was subsequently opened and registered at the SAPS Springs, with Detective Sergeant Radebe assigned as the investigating officer.

Sergeant Radebe’s investigation led to the arrest of the suspect. The probe included the collection of witness statements and arranging for the victim to be assessed by forensic social workers. During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused had allegedly been raping the victim on several occasions since May of the same year.

The court handed down the life sentence on 5 March 2026. Major General Sithole commended the investigation, noting that Sergeant Radebe presented consistent evidence that proved the accused’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
