A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the repeated rape of a 9-year-old girl in the Bainsvlei area, a sentence welcomed by police.
The case came to light on August 9, 2022, when the victim’s mother noticed physical symptoms and a discharge while assisting with laundry at her parental home. After questioning her daughter, the child identified her grandmother’s boyfriend as the perpetrator.
Investigations revealed that the victim had been raped on two separate occasions while visiting her grandmother at the suspect’s residence in Oranjeweg, Bainsvlei.
The matter was reported at Bainsvlei Police Station and immediately transferred to the Parkweg Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for specialized investigation. The suspect was arrested shortly afterward and remained in custody throughout the trial.
Working with Advocate Valerie Herholdt of the National Prosecuting Authority, the court convicted the accused of rape and imposed a life sentence.
