Man sentenced to 25 years for murder of girlfriend

The Butterworth High Court has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 25 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his 23-year-old girlfriend.

The accused was on parole at the time of the offence.

The murder occurred on 28 June 2025 at approximately 07:30 at Mbongendlu Location, Khobodi Administrative Area. A 64-year-old male witness, while passing near a house, noticed a naked female inside a yard and called a neighbour. The two men went to investigate.

Upon arrival, the victim told them she had been assaulted. They helped her onto a bed and attempted to seek medical assistance, but she collapsed and stopped breathing within minutes.

The suspect, who had been attending a traditional ceremony nearby, later admitted to having been in a fight with the deceased. The victim sustained four open wounds to the head and multiple bruises across her body. An iron pipe with a sharp hook, believed to be the weapon used in the attack, was seized and booked as evidence.

The accused was arrested on the same day, 28 June 2025, and charged with murder. He made his first appearance at the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on 30 June 2025. His bail application was heard and denied on 7 July 2025. The case docket was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions on 15 July 2025.

The trial was held at the Butterworth High Court from 16 to 20 March 2026, where the accused was found guilty of murder.
