North West Department Employee Appears in Court for Corruption

Seabelo Lebitse (43), an employee of the North West Department of Agriculture, appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, on three counts of corruption.

Lebitse was arrested earlier that day by the Klerksdorp-based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit following allegations that he solicited gratification from a service provider.

According to investigators, the accused approached a service provider in October 2020 who had submitted documents to bid for a tender at the department. Lebitse reportedly told the service provider he would assist in facilitating the awarding of the tender on condition that the provider “take care of him.”

The investigation revealed that the service provider paid Lebitse R10,000 for the purchase of his vehicle’s tyres. It was further established that the accused received an additional R2,000 and subsequently another R1,000 from the service provider on separate occasions.

Following the payments, the service provider entered into a service level agreement (SLA) with the department for the construction of a tunnel and installation of fishponds.

Lebitse was granted bail of R5,000. His case was postponed to 7 May 2026 for his first appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court sitting in Klerksdorp.
