DeKalb Officer Shot During Joint Operation with Cobb County; Suspect and Multiple Others Taken into Custody

A DeKalb County police officer was shot Thursday evening while assisting Cobb County authorities in an operation tied to an armed robbery, but the suspect accused of firing the shot is now in custody along with several other individuals, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. on Glenwood Road near Shamrock Drive in DeKalb County, close to a food mart. DeKalb County police were supporting Cobb County police, who were searching for a suspect wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Cobb’s jurisdiction.

During the operation, the suspect allegedly shot the DeKalb officer. The officer was rushed to a hospital and was reported in stable condition Thursday night, possibly grazed in the head. Officials described the injury as non-life-threatening, with the officer expected to recover.

The suspect then fled and barricaded himself inside an apartment or shed in the area behind the initial scene. A standoff ensued, lasting several hours. The main suspect was brought out and taken into custody around 9 p.m., according to on-scene reporting.

In total, at least six to seven people were detained and placed in police vehicles—either DeKalb County or Cobb County units—as the operation continued. Those taken into custody ranged in age from as young as 10 years old to individuals over 50 or 60 years old, including family members present at the location. The suspect originally wanted for the armed robbery was among those arrested.

By around 11 p.m., roughly six hours after the shooting, Glenwood Road had been reopened to the public, though the scene remained active.

DeKalb County Chief Communications Officer Dionna Smith confirmed details of the arrest and the ongoing investigation. The primary suspect faces charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer in DeKalb County, in addition to the original Cobb County charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

No further names of those detained have been released. Questions remain about the circumstances of the armed robbery that prompted the joint operation and how the shooting occurred during the assistance effort.

The incident drew a large law enforcement presence, with the road initially blocked for hours. Officials emphasized that the situation could have been far more severe, but the officer’s stable condition brought relief to the department.

Investigations by both DeKalb and Cobb County police departments are continuing.
